fabric for alterations

Okay, so, I just successfully shortened a bra band, so I feel ready to tackle the gore. I have a Chantelle bra in a 36H. I just shortened the band by about 4 inches (it was a really really stretchy band), and now I can tell the cups will fit with the proper sized gore. It needs to be expanded top to bottom, so I'm thinking it will need to be cut in half --- and then I'll need some sturdy, elastic bra material to sew to each side of the gore. so... Where would I get such material? From cutting apart other bras? (I do have some old bras I can't use that I'd be willing to spare for this purpose. It would be a patchwork bra then, but this is mainly a test to see if I can get it to work... Does it sound like it could work?

If I'd been thinking about this ahead of time, I'd just have cut out excess material from the band on this bra, but I wasn't and wasn't quite sure what would need to be done... I did a really sturdy sewing job on this one too -- I reinforced the seams 3 times since they were messy and unstable. So I'm thinking I'll get one of my old Wacoal bras that I can't use and start cutting up the band...?

  • I'm guessing that you'd be better off cutting the gore in the bra out entirely, putting together the replacement so that it's one piece that you can then sew back in place on each side. Hopefully my explanation makes sense, if not let me know if you have any questions that I can answer for further clarification.

  • valentine556 So how would you sew it in if the gore were cut out entirely? I mean, after that, it's just underwire, so what would you attach the new gore to? I've seen this recommended, but I don't really understand how it would work. With this particular bra, the wires were almost touching at the top, so there's not much to work with on the bra already.
