Padded/molded vs. unpadded - cupdepth and sizing

I need my trusted Bratabase think thank here <3

Some of you may have noticed that cupdepth varies in bras of the same size, due to the different construction and, well, sizing inconsistencies.
But this is even more the case when you start comparing padded and unpadded bras - going by numbers unpadded bras can have 4 cm bigger cupdepth (equivalent of two sizes) then padded ones.
I have several theories on this but would like to hear your thoughts an experiences.
For those of you who wear both padded and unpadded - do you need to size up for a padded bra?
Do they feel smaller irl like numbers suggest?
What's your perimeter and what unpadded/padded cup depths work for you?
How do you explain the difference?

  • For padded would you also include lightly lined?

  • I can give my two cents here, but It might not even be worth that much being that I am small cup (have been wearing 34A's most of the time, wide root and shallow, though I'm experimenting with smaller bands/bigger cups based on the recommendations from all of you here).

It's hard to find non padded bras in my size so I base my size based on padded bras so I don't have much need to size up, rather I need to size down for unpadded bras. I find there is usually more depth in the cup, my perimeter is 7 inches and I find that a bra with about 6-7 inches of cup depth works well regardless if it's padded or non padded providing the cups are wide enough.

I think it makes sense that padded cups have less depth because they are designed to push you up and in, so they are intentionally forcing the breast tissue out of the cup.
