What is a bra supposed to be supporting?

I don't understand the purpose of "support" in a bra for someone with boobs like mine. I've always had this curiosity, but it has grown much greater in the past two days as I read many bra reviews from women around my bra size. They talk about how much "support" a bra is offering. How?? Why? I don't get it! My boobs just stay where they are, nothing is being moved or lifted and I wouldn't want it to. Even if I had something to hold up, I'm one of those people that believe letting your body do its own work will keep the natural elasticity strongest, so I don't think I'd want to lift 'em.

I know everyone has different shapes and fullness/heaviness/squishiness, but I still find it very hard to imagine this function, especially with smaller women like me (I'm something like a 28E~, but almost never wear bras). So what is it that you guys are expecting in terms of support when you choose a bra? I just want to be able to wear clothes without looking goofy. I know this question probably sounds reeeaal silly to a lot of you guys, but so many reviews talk about this and I really want to understand why.

  • All boobs are different. It sounds like maybe your breasts are self-supporting. I'm a similar size to you, but mine are pendulous. Their shape and position in and out of a bra are entirely different. I'm almost always in discomfort without a bra on and I'm a 28F. It comes down to personal preference. There is also no evidence that wearing or not wearing a well fitting bra affects the breast's ability to support itself over time.

  • Ajlez , if you're happy with the shape of your breasts in bras, there's no reason for you to seek bras that will change that shape. I'm all for anything that will make bra shopping easier and cheaper. It sounds like your breasts are perky, aka self-supporting. Mine are, too. I seek out bras that push tissue in from the sides, toward the center of my chest. Looked at from the front, my upper body then looks narrower. Because my shape is an inverted triangle, that illusion makes me look slimmer and more balanced overall.

If you note in your reviews that the shape your bras gives you is very similar to your shape when you're not wearing a bra, that information is valuable to readers. I wouldn't discount the value of your contributions at all. Welcome to Bratabase!
