On Swimsuit Sizing...

When buying bikini tops, do you tend to go up a band size or down? I'm looking at some Freya bikinis and I'm wondering how they fare size-wise in comparison to their bras. It seems like the bikini bands might be firmer than their bras. For example, I have a Freya bikini top - called the Pier- that I bought on clearance in 32G and it actually seems to fit quite well. In other Freya models, my size seems to vary: sometimes 30FF works, sometimes 30G - however I'm finding 30 bands to be not as snug as I like unless I use the first/middle hooks so I'm keen to try a 28GG in Freya and see how that works.

Meanwhile, bikinis -- am I better off sticking to 32 bands, at least with Freya? I'll be sure to poke around the bratabase to see what data I can find, but I am curious what your thoughts are!

  • I find that, at least for me, it's best to stick with my regular Freya size. I usually wear a 30 band in Freya (32 for the sports bra), and I have bikinis in both 30 and 32, but prefer the 30. As for cups, I don't seem to be fitting my 30FF Freya bras at the moment, but can still wear a 32F in a Sweetheart shaped bikini. The 30G Plunge bikini is a better fit, though, and I definitely couldn't fit into a smaller cup there.

  • I've found the swimsuit tops to have firmer bands than the padded halfcups (which run large in the band), but probably similar bands to the unpadded bras. The bikini band material is far firmer than most of their bra bands. I think it's possible the band measures a bit larger unstretched, but hardly stretches otherwise.

I recently bought a freya triangle-top bikini on clearance at ASOS, but since ASOS only goes up to an F cup, I had to order my sister size 32F. I normally need a 28G (or 30FF in tight bands), so I figured I would have to alter the band, but surprisingly it has been fine so far. It might stretch eventually, so I may have to alter it, especially if I want to do some "actual swimming" in it, but it's doing very well for being 2 band sizes too big.
