I happened to spend some time in the Wikipedia a couple of days ago and out of pure curiosity I read what they had to say about bras, or rather "brassiere". Well, the history section was very interesting, but after that the longer I read, the stranger I felt.
The image I got from the lengthy text was that bras are unnecessary. They won't contribute to the health of their wearers, actually the text hinted it's vice versa! Of course ill-fitting bras won't give support and thus can increase neck- and back pains and cause chafing, but I still find it hard to believe that all those 80% of all bra wearers who use a wrong size bra, would do it just for "social norms". Hello! This isn't the 18th century or Afghanistan where a woman can get killed or sentenced to a lunatic asylum for not wearing something the society thinks is appropriate!
My mother had breasts the size of a melon when she was younger, before she had a reduction. I don't even know what size she used to wear, since what was available was too small for her. From old pictures I'd say she would have needed a 34M or 36L. She's still suffering from neck pains and has a slight hump in her upper back because of the weight of her breasts - she got herself a relatively decent (sturdy but ill-fitting) bra the first time after she was 25! She always told me that before that she hated doing any kind of sports simply because it was so painful. All that breast mass swinging about... yeah, I can imagine. I'd never ever try to jump or run without a bra unless it was a dire emergency. The few times I've been forced to do so, it's been agony for my decolletage skin and the ligaments beneath - and I have a lot smaller boobs than my mom used to have.
I hate to think what some big-boobed teenager, who doesn't happen to have a mom or sister(s) who could help her find a good bra, will think after reading the opinionated b****hit that's in the Wikipedia right now. Of course those of us who have beautiful small breasts, don't necessarily need a bra. But hands up, all ye big-boobed sisters out there: how many of you use a bra because "what would people think of me otherwise" or "my job requires I use a bra" (=> as in "what would people think of me otherwise").
I use a bra because that's when I feel comfortable, both in the vertebrae and in the upper chest. Oh, and incidentally because they're so pretty. :)

  • I'm totally with you! I've read the Wikipedia article too and I think it's utter bullshit stemmed from ignorance. Of course there can be further damage to the boobs if you use one that's COMPLETELY the wrong size for you! Just like jeans it has to fit right. Buy a pair of jeans that are 5 sizes too small for you and I can guarantee you you would have severe pain from that as well! And it certainly wouldn't serve your figure right. Actually, not only boobs can change shape due to clothing, if you wear too small panties the "flab" will search for other places to settle as well. Ignorance is the word.

  • I had to stop reading the page after 5 minutes it irritated me that much! Who wrote this crap!!
