First of all, I would like to thank the ladies that got this database off the ground. I don't know who you are, but you've changed my life. I have HOPE!

Since many of you have talked about the sadness of not living near any great bra shops, I thought I would document my experience in a city with tons of them. New York City!!!

As a brand spanking new resident of the Big Apple, I was psyched to find a new everyday bra. For me, this means darker color, lightweight, and not too high of a cup (which would pop out of my work tanks)

I'm a shallow, wide root w/ full bottom
Tight Underbust: 38.5"
Standing Bust: 48"
Leaning Bust: 49"

Day 1:
Aiming for shops within walking distance. WALKING DISTANCE! I fraking love this city. It's 86 degrees & 60% humidity. Walking 3.1 miles. Easy.

UPPER EAST SIDE

Linda's Bra Salon: 828 Lexington Ave (btwn 63rd & 64th), lindasonline.com
AA-K cups & 28-44 bands
- Appointments for fitting highly recommended
- Tiny shop, quiet, 2 fitting rooms
- Superfast. (pro or con?) I was fitted and done w/ 4 bras in less than 15 mins
- Had similar method to Scoop/Swoop - called "Jiggle it all in"
- Gave me 4 bras in 3 sizes: 38DD, 38DDD, 38FF - which all were either too small in the cup, or cut into the top of my boobs dramatically despite seeming to fit otherwise.
In general, awesome to find a place that carries a huge range. However, service felt a little too rushed for me. I need more than 5 secs in a bra to figure out if it feels good. Didn't buy. She said I was limited to those 4 bras basically. I'm not sure if that's all they had in stock or if my request of an everyday bra was too specific. Will have to try the Linda's Murray Hill location.

Violas Smart Shop: 1482 1st Ave
- Yelp raved about it, but the outside scared me. GRANDMA BRA ALERT
- Inside, same thing
- Didn't ask for a fitting as I couldn't see any bras I would be remotely interested in

Livi's Lingerie: 1456 3rd Ave (btwn 82nd & 83rd), livislingerie.com
A-DDD cups & 30-42 bands
- Window display was decent, perhaps a little dated.
- Chatted with the saleswoman older than my Grandma. (pro: experience!)
- Bras stored in their original boxes that appear to be from the 1950s
- Only stocked black, white, nude
Requested a bra fitting... here's where it got interesting. She told me that because of the amount of work it requires to fit a bra - as all brands are different - we would not be doing a bra fitting until I was ready to purchase. Then she would pull down the sizes we might need and try a variety in that bra. Huh. I explained that I couldn't possibly know if I would want a bra until trying it on. But to no avail.

Result: No bras. Feeling a little defeated. Need to be more aggressive.

  • Hey! Biased upper west sider here, but I'd put town shop near the top of your list. :) Their fitting can be hit and miss but was better than Linda's and they have a large stock. Mostly, I've never felt rushed there.

Also, is there a reason you're aiming at 38F? Bard on your experiences? with those measurements I might have guessed 38GG. Also heads up to be careful about sizing - must fitters I've encountered here refuse to believe there's a difference between uk and US sizing, and don'tknow double letters or erroneously think it's half sizing.

  • I will definitely check that place out. Thanks! I asked for a 38F partially bc I'm still not sure I'm a G or GG. It just sounds too crazy. Also, just asking for a F was a big deal. I asked for that and a G and it seemed like i had told her the moon was a cookie. NYC fitters make me nervous. The briskness, the urgency... It's not quite the laid back California style I'm accustomed to. I just gotta psych myself up ahead next time. *Be Assertive! B-E Assertive!*
