Bra fitting help » Painful red marks; wire too narrow?
Chantelle » C Chic 3 Part Cup Bra (3582) » 70C 32:3
Issue resolved
Thanks! I'm going to try a Cleo and a Panache and see if those work better for me.
Original problem
This bra looks okay in the pictures (well, to me anyway -- I'm new at this) but it's quite painful to wear. It digs in at my breastbone, and the outside part of the wire sits on my breast rather than on my ribs. It's not apparent in these pictures, but if I wear it for a while, my boobs escape out the side of the bra as well.
I'm thinking I should go up a cup size, or try a different brand entirely. Any recommendations for relatively wide, shallow boobs?

helpfulYour breasts look very similar to mine--very wide root, and shallow. Since you're saying the underwire rests on your breast tissue, you definitely need to go up a cup or two. A larger cup will contain that breast tissue on the sides. I tried many of the French brands and found their bands too big and their cups too narrow and deep for me. I recommend trying Cleo and Masquerade by Panache--these two lines have been wonderful for me. They are made for women with breasts like ours--wide at the root and shallow. You may also want to try going down a band size--since your ribcage measures 30.5, you might be comfortable in a 30 band.

helpfulI agree with you and the other comments: the wires on this bra are too narrow for your boobs. There could well be an "orange in a glass"-effect, meaning not all of your breast tissue can get into the cups, because the wires are too narrow. So you might need a bigger cup size as well in a bra with wider cups and if you scoop and swoop properly.
I'd also recommend Panache bras, especially Cleo Juna (and all the different colourful styles with the same cut, cups run a bit small, so a 32D might fit), Cleo's unpadded balconettes, especially George (if you can still find it) and Marcie, but also Lucy, Brooke, Alexa ...
Besides, Freya half cups (cups run a bit bigger in this size range) could fit you well, especially styles with the same cut as Summer, Monet, Libby. Their bands are fairly stretchy, so a 30 might be right for you here.
Lepel Fiore Balconette and Plunge (the plunge cups are even wider than the balconette's), Ewa Michalak PL (plunge) bras and Fauve half-cups, especially Merissa, Brianna and Celine (if you can still find them), are other bras that fit a lot of people with wide root shallow boobs.
(Sorry about all the discontinued models in the list, but Fauves, e.g., are hit-and-miss, so I wanted to give good examples.)
Generally half cup styles with just vertical seams work well.Updated on March 23, 2013 Flag this

helpfulI don't have a rec, but I think you're right on the mark with needing a bra for wide, shallow breasts. I just had a conversation with a fitter this morning who remarked that she loves Chantelle because they're good for her close-together breasts. This is does look too narrow for you in the gore - the cups needs to be further apart.
