Now this really is a bra with a bit of a story for me (it's a lengthy story, but bear with me, the review will come at the end). I remember I was in a big department store a few years ago on a mission to find a bra for under tight T shirts. At the time I absolutely hated bra shopping for 2 very good reasons.

    a) there was hardly anything in my size, which meant I had to go through all the racks and racks of bras (usually the bigger sizes hang at the bottom of the rack, so there was a lot of squatting involved), getting ... my hopes up whenever I saw a cute design and then being disappointed when my size was not available, yet again. This made me feel like a big boobed freak. Mind you, I was still wearing 34E's back then, but I didn't know any better than the bra alphabet pretty much ended with E.
    b) when I finally was so frustrated and desperate that I would ask the shop lady to find some stuff in my size for me, the only things they would bring me were awful granny bras, and I mean the kind that immediately KILL the sex drive of anyone within a 5 mile radius. And those granny bras also tended to fit me poorly (full cups are not my thang I have learned since), but the shop ladies would insist that this sad empty-tea-bag-pointing-down look was completely fine, and that this was just the way things were for people with my size. By the end of the fitting I was usually so deflated that I didn't put up a fight anymore and ended up buying least horrible one.

So on that day the whole fitting episode was heading in that same direction once again, when I saw this Freya Totally Tartan half cup bra hang on a rack. It was not what I was looking for (too much color and visible seams, and back then I was under the impression that anything padded would add bulk so I avoided them like the plague), but I somehow decided to try it on anyway. And lo and behold, it was actually pretty great! It fit me properly! No quad boob! It looked attractive! No tea bags in sight! Like a breath of fresh air for my boobs!

I still have no idea why I didn't buy it straight away, I was probably suffering from severe and acute post traumatic bra fitting stress disorder, but I left the store with another ill fitting ugly bra. The Totally Tartan bra kept popping up in my mind every now and then as a glimmer of hope that there might be bras out there that would fit me better.

Then I discovered this website, learned about my boobs and about bras in general, and found out that there are plenty of great bras out there that will fit me. I quickly found out that half cups seem to be my best bet, so I went through the search results for half cup bras, and the Totally Tartan jumped off the page. I recognized it right away as The Bra That Got Away. Granted, it is not the most attractive or sexy looking design, although it has a certain fresh-faced, cutesy charm, but I decided I had to order it anyway for old times sake (in my proper size 32G this time).

And I still think it is quite a good bra for me. It fits my wide set, somewhat shallow, short rooted boobs well. It lifts and gives my boobs a nice round profile. It's very, very comfortable, the fabric is soft and the straps are too. The cup padding is nice and light. It does not add any bulk, but it does cover the nipples (I don't care about this so much, but I know others do). The band runs a bit large and it's extremely stretchy; for the moment it is still ok on the loosest hook, but I think I could even go down a band size. The cup also runs a bit large. When I compare it to my Freya Marvel, which I find quite similar in terms of fit & shape, this TT in 32G feels more like the Marvel in 32GG. My only issue with this bra is the same issue I have with the Marvel: the under wires seems to drag down a little bit, mainly in the center. Still not entirely sure why this happens, but I don't mind it too much. It's not a bra for under tight t shirts though, the seams are showing too much.

So that was my bra adventure!

Love this bra, only wish it would come in a 30GG. Fits my breasts perfectly, but is slightly loose in size 32 band. I use the tightest hook and it is "okay."

**EDIT** ive added measurements, but ive worn it a few times so the band may be a bit longer. ive jut freshly washed it, and most of the time that brings the band back in if its stretched a bit.

NOTE: ive marked this as fitting in the cups, but one side fits well and one side is gaping. ive chosen to side with my well fitting side, since its the larger one of the two. additionally, the band now fits fine, but needed to be broken in with an extender first. i wasnt sure how to list that without it marking the bra as not fitting, so im ... going with how it fits now. the gore and straps are also technically too wide, but i seem to run into that everywhere, so im calling this a lesser evil.

technically, i think this cup may be too wide. i can wear narrower bras comfortably, and also the straps slide off from being too wide set. its still a ton better than most bras on me, so im dealing with it, but an ideal bra would be narrower, with closer straps, and an overlapping gore. the top of the right cup gapes a significant amount, probably a mix of that side being smaller and the straps being so wide that they get caught in my armpit and push the cup around. plus, the gore being too wide shoves the cup around and move how they fit.

the band on this was too tight for a while and needed and extender, but now is fine. i dislike the material of Freya half cup bands, because its a very thing stretchy elastic which lends itself to rolling, especially on squashier bodies like my own. instead of the two strips of thick elastic at the top and bottom of a thin stretchy elastic, i would love to see one uniform thick and firm material. i feel as though, when the band is the correct tension, i get heinous back fat.

im not a huge fan of the pattern, but this is one of my workhorse bras, so that doesnt matter much to me.

I knew in my heart that this bra was likely to be not projected enough, but I still tried it because it was in my recommendations. I wish that someone had encouraged me to follow my gut and NOT try it, because now I am super sad that it doesn't fit well. The combination of wide wires and shallow cups causes me to spill out of the center and top of the cups, which is disappointing because this bra is ADORABLE. I love the colors and the pattern, and what's even more, I love the feel of the fabric, which is super soft and silky and feels awesome! I'm super picky about fabrics so this is saying something. Anyway, not a fit. https://d28qt14g3opchh.cloudfront.net/smileys/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" /> Womp womp. Why can't the plunges come in this fabric?!

Too bad this doesn't work for you! I do believe that there is also a totally tartan plunge that is supposed to be much more projected. I don't know if it's made from exactly the same fabric but I would expect do.

Oh yeah, I eyed that bra for a long time, wanting to try it but knowing it wouldn't work.
Comexim has the Comexim Free Time (270) in a nice plaid that reminds me of the Totally Tartan's blue colourway, though of course not the same. I've been considering it.

    • There totally is a plunge model of totally tartan. It's model 1421 and will be narrower and more projected than the half cup model.

I love this style (obviously, since I have it altered down to a 30GG), but in 32G the band is too big than I'd like it to be. I'm not swimming in it, but I prefer firmer bands. Everything else about the bra fits great, and I've worn it a couple times with a Rixie Clip, but I found an altered one, so I can pass this one on.

Bought this off Braswap, it was altered. I like how it fits more than my 32G unaltered in the same color and style.

I fell in love with this bra when I first saw it, but unfortunately they didn't have it in my size (30GG). Thankfully, the place I got it from does alterations and they took a 32G and shortened the band for me. After wearing it for a while the band started to stretch out and just got to loose to wear. Also, I grew a little as well and my boobs got too big for the cups and caused me to get the awful quadboob effect whenever I wore it.

As with other padded half cups by Freya I have tried, they really are too wide and shallow for me. I just keep buying them and crossing my fingers because I keep finding good deals on them. I have the Secret Garden padded half cup (in the same size), which is supposed to be the same cut as this. It doesn't fit quite the same though. I feel as though the cup is more malleable with this one and may allow me more room in the bottom, but I can't wear it as for some reason the top of the cups gape like crazy. I was getting a little bit of gaping in the Secret Garden but this actually shows through shirts.

Honestly, if you have the breast shape to go with these bras, they are wonderful. I'm really just living in denial.

Fits well in the band for me, cups gap at the top due to my breast shape.
