I bought this off of eBay and was worried it wouldn't fit me but it is near perfect. I have slight gaping on the top of one side but my one breast is smaller than the other and this happens a lot. At the end of the day I'd rather gape a bit than quad. Loving the vertical seams as a FoT.

One of the challenges with being FoT is finding vertically seamed bras that are unique in colour and/or lovely in design. That said, the hot coral and shell design of the bra are what attracted me. The thick straps are a bonus.

One of my rare eBay "wins" haha. I'm usually not so fortunate but bratabase is a great resource for making as best a bet as I can.

    Didn't fit

This is my first purchase in the quest for properly fitting bras. I have been scouring the Internet and learning about breast shapes and proper fit. I believe I am (after two babies...) full on bottom, pendulous even, center full, somewhat close set, with narrow and short roots and soft tissue. This bra almost fits, but I think a 28E would be better. I have heard that Freya bands can run a little bigger compared to other bands, and I definitely think that's the case with this bra. I tried on another brand at the same time I bought this one (didn't fit at all, didn't buy) and ... this band was looser than the other one. I have to wear it on the middle hook to get decent support, and the tightest would be better but I don't want to wear out the elastic too fast. The upper edge of the cup is not quite laying flat, because I am quite full on bottom and shallow on top. Wearing the band on the tightest hook also helps the lace lay flatter, further leading me to believe the 28E would be better. But hey, for as cheap as I found it, it's a million times better than what I've been wearing. The wire is probably a little wider than I need, but it doesn't seem to create any other fit issues and is perfectly comfortable. The gore is pretty tall, but I'm so happy it lays flat! I've never had a bra that did that before! The very top of the wires in the gore is on breast tissue just a little because I'm fairly close set. It does not cut or feel uncomfortable at all, however. Overall, a nice bra; for me a sister size and a little more closed top would be even better, but it's totally wearable. Any suggestions for other bras to try based on how this fits would be much appreciated.

    • Cleo Lucy (5851) is great for FoB boobs!
Also, you might be successful with Freya 'Balcony Plunge' bras, most of which are both narrow and suited for FoB boobs.

    • Your 45 degree shot makes it look like you may have tall roots. If you do (and you will know this more than I do, so if not then do ignore the following!)

For bras suited to taller roots, any of Freya's vertical seam bras (sister cuts to the one you're wearing now). The vertical seam 'Pandora' is very pretty:

      http://www.freyalingerie.com/lingerie/pandora/aw16/vertical_seam_bra.aspx?colour=noir

Triumph beauty full darling is available in a 30 band, TTS as far as I know, and again is perfect for tall roots:

      http://uk.triumph.com/wired-bra/beauty-full-darling/10156816.html?cgid=200000&color=0004_Black

It's also a better daily bra, I think, than the Freya options - comes in a variety of basic colours, pattern is minimal and disappears under clothes, etc. I would suggest that, if you try this bra, you try it in a 30DD and a 30E, as when I tried it I found the cups a mite small. The top of the cups do close a smidge.

This Fantasie bra works for tall roots too - http://www.bratabase.com/browse/fantasie/allegra-vertical-seam-bra-9091/

For bras with a different cut (not vertical seam!!!) which are do-able with tall roots AND close, I have also had success with Cleo Kali (Lucy is a sister cut), Freya Fearne and Freya Fearne's sister cuts. Freya Enchanted does have that 'george fold' on me (where my tall root pushes the lace down, creating a crease) but it is invisible under clothes and it gives me a lovely shape.

This v. active Reddit/A bra that fits and bratabase user is a similar size to you and has tall roots. Her blog is here:

      https://themusingsofrenzilla.wordpress.com

Would be worth your checking out, I think! Good luck.

    • Thank you both for the suggestions! I am on the lookout for a Lucy in my size. What's the best way to determine short/average/tall roots? Leaning?

    • Oh I know, it's so hard - without really looking at loads of other women's breasts, there's nothing to compare yours too! So how to know.

Anyway. It's about how high up above your apex your breast tissue goes. With short roots all breast tissue will be collected around a smaller area, average roots a little bigger an area, tall roots you'll see (in our size range and w/ soft breasts) a gentle slope up from the apex (which your side picture looks like, but it's one picture and I could very well be wrong).

My roots start about three fingers below my collarbone - if I squish all my tissue upwards I can more or less feel where it starts. So I think do that.

With soft breast tissue it can be hard to figure out (again, I'm the same here!) bc the majority of the tissue will sink to the bottom part of the breast. Problem is in a bra, some of it will get squished back up into the top of the root, so bras which are not good for tall roots will cut in and not sit right. If you ever get what I called a George fold earlier, in spite of being FOB, that would also suggest tall roots.

Here are a couple of images from ABTF which try to show tall roots:

      http://i.imgur.com/2ZvOpRU.png

      http://i.imgur.com/YQCNmMr.png

    • I think mine starts 4 or 5 finger widths down. It's really about where you see the cleavage line (cleavage shadow, lol) start.

    • Okay, maybe average root height then? Which makes me wonder if the look of your shape in the 45 degree pic is being caused by the bra itself - if it might in fact be too shallow for you? That might then smoosh/flatten your tissue a little upwards? And that the gaping at the top is not so much bc you are shallow there (in an open cup that shouldn't be this much of a problem) as it is that your breast is pushing the cup away to find the projection it needs?

This particular bra is rather shallow for its size. How does its cup depth measure up against your vertical breast measurement? Given that you are pendulous, you likely (though not necessarily) want more projection than this cup gives you.

All suggestions thus far are still good though - Lucy is less projected than Freya bras, and it tends toward wider wires in this size range, but if the wires won't be a problem for you its definitely still worth a shot. Kali is narrower and more projected. I think the fit of Cleo bras is great for softer tissue - their fabrics don't have much give, they really lift and shape. Panache bras would be a good try, too. For those two brands, I would order a cup size with a depth close-to or slightly under your vertical breast measurement.

Freya plunge balconies are also good. Curvy Kate has a number of good narrow/deep styles with closed tops - Ellace and Bardot in particular are available in a similar colourway to this one, if you prefer darker shades/neutrals. Again with these, I would look for a cup depth similar to your vertical measurement here on bratabase and order your cup size based off that. I wouldn't go smaller than your vertical measurement in either Freya or CK though, as their wires are softer than Cleo and do pull a bit wider when worn. (As an example, the CK ellace has a depth of around 9.5 inches in the 28F unworn, worn on me it is around 9 inches).

    • Yes to projection, definitely. I haven't done my vertical breast perimeter yet, but this bra's depth is a little smaller than my horizontal perimeter. So that makes sense--the gaping on this one is actually more near the center, versus at the very top of the cup like I have with molded cups. Pushing out for more depth seems like it could cause that. Thank you again for your comments; they are very precise and helpful. Any insight on Polish brands? I hear they are great for projection.

    • Ugh and it is late here so I am being silly - horizontal is absolutely what I meant to say/type, not vertical.

I have not tried any polish bras but, if you haven't seen it, it would be worth looking at the blog dreamsandunderthings. She is projected, soft, w/ short roots but lots of the polish bras on her blog are halfcups so should work for you too. If you're in the states, there is an online company which sells polish bras . comexim I think, maybe avocado too, and their bras are gorgeous? - but I am in the uk so have never paid too much attention to them. I'd also search on the A bra that fits subreddit for polish info - everyone is v. helpful there!

    • Haha, great. Yes, it's late over there!

  3. I changed the underwires of my 30E - Freya ยป Starlet Vertical Seam Bra (1061) for longer and more flexible ones. Turns out, my instinct was right! The new wires turned Starlet from a torture device into a very comfy bra that fits perfectly.

Old underwires: width 12,3 cm / length 22,8 cm / sturdy
New underwires: width 13,5cm / length 23,8 cm / flexible

How this affects the fit of the bra:
    - The cups became wider and slightly more shallow.
    - The new wires stretch with the band, so the band is a few cm longer now. Since the band doesn't have a lot of stretch to it, it ... fits more comfily this way.
    - The underwires don't poke at all - neither under my arms nor at the center gore. I'm happy.
    - There was fabric sticking out under the arms because the old ones were too short. This is now fixed.

I wish Freya would use more flexible underwires in the smaller cup sizes by default, as those sturdy ones often feel restricting and uncomfortable on people with small boobs or bony ribcages.

    • Where did you get the new wires?

    • Vadaslava I got them at an onlineshop in my country that's selling sewing and dessous making supplies :)

    • Vadaslava It's always a good idea to check out local sewing supply shops and department stores first! But in the case of the Starlet, the wires they sold there would not fit, so I went for an online shop with a larger variety in wire shapes and sizes.

    • Wait, that's a thing?! How did I not think of this? Thank you! I'm definitely going to look into this!

    • 1

Very nice! Since it's coming out in a black colorway, I may pick one up again at some point. I'll definitely keep this in mind if the wires are still stiff and pokey.

  4. Boob twin, this bra fits! Yay! Finally, and unlined Freya that works for me. I read that half cup and vertical seam cups might work better than plunge styles in my size range, and it's true. The depth on this is perfect for me so I'd say it probably runs small in the cup for an unlined bra.

Be careful when shopping, the Starlet also comes in a plunge style. If I had to guess, that one is probably cut deeper in the cups.

I'll post measurements and pics later but this does run larger in the band than Cleo and Panache bras. I am wearing it on the middle hooks and it's comfortable, but I can fasten it on the tightest hooks. It is a straight back, not a leotard back, but so far the straps are staying on my shoulders.

The bra is really pretty. I like the mint green color and the pink spotted bows. The lace is not the smoothest, it definitely shows under thin or tight tops.

    Didn't fit

I had been lusting after this bra from the moment it appeared - its based on the Fauve Chloe Vertical Seam (a gorgeous, elegant bra I tried on once and fantasized about ever since). So much more sensual than its balcony sister - the halfcup cut and vertical seam created a cakes on a plate sex appeal that the balcony version couldn't quite reach. The little polka dot blue bows could be overlooked - sure they're more whimsy than sexy, but they were small and unobtrusive. I was willing to take this bra or any of its sister cuts (Fauve Chloe, Fantasie Allegra) in any color, but ... I loved the basic black most of all. So the minute one appeared in my local Nordstroms Rack, I knew I had to have it. Finally, this sexy, seductive bra was mine!
    Alas...
I never got around to wearing it for more than half an hour at a time. Falling prey to the same problem I was plagued with in Freya halfcups - too wide wires painfully digging in to my uncushioned (and thus unprotected) side ribs -this bra became unwearable for me. I was willing to ignore the fact that it was too shallow, or that I got major quadding every time I breathed, but the pain in my sides was too much. It was as painful as a Panache bra (also unwearable for me due to firm wires that dig in). This surprised me because the Freya Marvel (also a shallow, wider bra) was never so painful. Perhaps its because the Marvel has that "side sling" sort of cut rather than a pure vertical seam. To be fair, this bra is probably a size too small (I wear a 30F in Freya balcony bras because they are so wonderfully deep, but fit a 30FF in halfcups - my EMs are all 65FF too) - sadly, this style is not made beyond an F cup to test if a different size would be a better fit.

If you love (or are at least not bothered by) freya halfcups, this bra should work wonders for you.

Some quick details on the construction of that bra:
    - It's an unpadded halfcup with one vertical seam in the cups.
    - The center gore is quite high, and comes up at about the same height as the wings.
    - The wires are long (23cm), but still about 1,5 cm shorter than the actual wire channels, so there is considerable wiggle room and they may slip around.
    - As bellea noted in her review of the 28DD, the wires are hard and unstretchy and I found that they poke my sternum and sides uncomfortably. I def. have to exchange the wires for softer ones in order to be able to ... wear this bra comfortably and for prolonged periods of time.
    - I found the gore to be quite wide compared to Comexim or Ewa Michalak, but there is no actual space between the wires. It's just that the wire channels are quite wide.
    - It has a straight back (no leotard back).
    - The band is long, but it doesn't have lots of give, so the bra feels quite tight when put on. It stretches to 30 inches on my new, unworn bra. It will probably loosen up after a few wears and after I exchanged the wires.
    - Cups seem true to size and fit overall, apart from the uncomfortable stabby wires.

I may update this review as soon as I exchanged the wires.

UPDATE: Now that my boobs have grown a little (half a cup size, maybe), it fits more comfortably. The wires don't poke, neither at the sides nor at the gore. Sadly, the cups are a little too small now.

  7. This is my first vertical seamed bra and I'm not quite sure about it. The top of the cup seems tight and unforgiving and wants to dig in. I think this bra might suit someone with more bottom fullness to help fill out the vertical seam and avoid the top edge. I will report back once I've worn this for a day to determine whether I will keep or list this bra.

So I've worn this for a day and it feels comfortable. I don't think I am quite filling out the apex of these cups, which makes me think this bra requires a fuller bottomed breast. I was wrong in thinking the top was digging in because it is not an issue today.

    • I'm curious to see this bra in person and might check it out if it's at Nordstrom... But based on the vertical seam bras I used to wear when I was smaller, when you get this effect it's usually because you have too MUCH lower projection and the cup cannot accommodate it, so it kind of scrunches down as your boob climbs up to where there is more depth. This could also explain why the cup edge is cutting in, your whole breast is sitting higher in the cup than the designer intended so the cup edge cuts across a fuller part of your breast.

    • That's an interesting point. I think that there is enough depth for me because it measures at 9" which is usually perfect for me. I also made it sound like I was quad-boobing in this bra, but I'm not today. I usually scoop and swoop so that my nipples are higher, but today I'm seeing what happens when I let them rest more naturally. I'm going to wear this today to see how my breasts settle into this bra.

    • Scooping & swooping is important though, not just to bring your nipples up, but to be sure you have all of your breast tissue in the cup and supported by wires that are sitting where they need to be. From these pics, I would say it looks about a half cup too small.

    • I think these pictures aren't very good. I'll take new ones today once I get home. I'm wearing this right now and I'm not minding the fit. The wrinkling in the vertical seam I was talking about in my review seems to have flattened out with washing. Once I take it off and see the marks I'll know if I got everything inside the wires. And I dont really have a lot of extra skin to scoop and swoop anyway. I usually do the "lean, scoop, and wiggle" when I put on a bra and then reach in and smooth forward and upwards. Does that make sense? I feel like if I went up a cup it would be too big. Vertical seamed bras are a mystery to me and I do appreciate any input!

    • With vertical seamed bras it's often not the depth at the normal measured point (wire tip to wire tip level) that is a problem. It's the depth in the lower half of the cup. Vertical seamed cups are usually pretty shallow down there.

I got this mainly because I see people who say they need to size up for molded cups from their size in unlined cups, and my train of logic was "then I should maybe size down for unlined cups." Well, every time I size down in cup I get quadboob, and this bra was no different. The cups were too small.

The wires on this were not at all uncomfortable, which is quite the puzzle since the wires on the 28DD poked me all over and they're basically the same. Nearly identical width, same gore height, almost the same wing height. But this one didn't press uncomfortably against my ... sternum nor against my side, despite being too narrow.

The main problem with this bra was the cups. I got quadboob, and oddly enough, the cups acted like they were too closed on top and wrinkled at the top as well. I guess it wasn't open on top enough to accommodate larger sizes.

The band was the same as the 28DD, a bit too long. The straps were fine.

The bra is still good for shallow, FOT breasts, and in this size range, probably wide roots too.

I'd always read Freya bands were looser, but this sucker is tight....is it the black color? Is it the fact that it's probably a little bit too small for me? I really don't know. The upside-down band test was inconclusive, but I definitely don't want to wear this bra all day. Part of that is that it's scratchy. The lace isn't very soft but neither is the rest. As others have said, the top line is rather open. It technically wrinkles but only by about 1/8" (I'm even and center-full). It's the first unlined bra I've had that was even close though! I'm not tall but have a long torso, probably similar to someone at least 5'10", and the straps are a teensy bit too short for me and too narrow for my shoulders as well. I'd recommend to a FOT person who's average or short in the torso and average or narrow in the shoulders.

I really like this bra. It gives a nice shape. I do think it is a touch shallow for me or the wires aren't long enough or it isn't wide enough. I really don't know what the problem is but it gives me side boob.
