    Didn't fit

So...the highly anticipated Curvy Kate full figure bra....has a lot of problems. There are also some really great things about it. It is a complicated bra. Let’s dive in.

First, the materials are super soft in the hands, really nice feeling. Nothing is hard or scratchy. Neither the band elastic nor the strap elastic has any nasty plasticky loops that are so common on Curvy Kate bras. The bra is lined with a firm but lightweight tulle on bottom and the same mesh as the band on top, under the lace, so there’s no internal quadboob anywhere. The ... design is a pretty typical 4 part cup where one part is a power bar up to the strap. The shape is more of a high apex plunge than a balconnet, although the gore is a similar height to a balconnet I have in the same size- this is not shown in the numbers, however, because while the wires match up, the gores overlapping A shaped bottom shortens the gore at the bottom. This is possibly my favorite part of the bra and others with high stomachs will love this. Most of my bras cut in at the bottom of the gore so I might be doing a new alteration on my bras from here on out.

The general shape of the bra is good. There is finally enough center and top room and the shape is right for me. The stretch lace is nice and firm. The higher strap attachment in theory allows more centered straps. The cup is plenty deep at the center and deepest part. The gore is not too tall or wide.

There are two main problems with this bra:
    1. The bra fits about 1-2 cups bigger than other Curvy Kates I own or have tried in 40JJ. It is both much wider and deeper. I wonder if there is vanity sizing going on, or an actual fit problem, as described below.
    2. The bra materials, besides those mentioned, are pretty problematic:

The wires are probably the worst part of the bra. They are the most flexible I've ever experienced. Combined with a firm band, they stretch back to my back. If I stretch the bra at all they begin flexing back. This may be intentional- when I hook the bra on the tightest hooks, they are really at my back, but the front of the bra is fairly smooth and fits pretty well. The sides of the bra don't gap as much. But the straps are then pulled too wide. The wires are also too short for the bra, causing a lot of gapping and loose floppy material at the top of the cup edge, which is exacerbated by the cup edge elastic being incorrectly sewed without stretching it enough. The wires actually end before the comfort cushion part, which means that the cushion does nothing. However, I will say that I can imagine the cushion would be really excellent protection for the chubbier-sided bra wearer. Certainly I can see its benefit for me.

The overlay fabric is likewise terrible. It is very stretchy and loose, and because it doesn't match the tension of the non-stretch tulle lining there are a lot of sewing errors and a ton of strange wrinkles. If I were to keep the bra, I would remove this layer of fabric as it does literally nothing except cause problems.

The straps are not great either. Although I love how wide and soft they are, they are a little too stretchy. I have to shorten them very short indeed to get any lift at all.

I want to compare this bra to my 40JJ - Curvy Kate » Curvy Kate Poppy Balcony Bra (CK10011) and my 40J - Curvy Kate » Dragonfly Plunge Bra (SG5411) , both of which are really excellent fits and pretty great feats of engineering in my mind, to say nothing of their beauty. Curvy Kate can make a really good bra when they spend the time and effort to engineer a good fit. This bra falls short, but there are concepts and qualities that can be improved on. My hope is that, with feedback, Curvy Kate can create something spectacular for the larger band + cup size that marries the elegance and excellent fit of their last season's best bras and the ingenuity and promise of this one.

As I typically switch out bra wires anyway, I almost want to try this bra in a 40J and change the wires, cut off the top fabric, and take in the sides where they gap if needed. Maybe when it goes on sale, or is sold used somewhere I could try it. It has a lot of potential, even if I would never recommend it for anyone to try off the rack.

I can't believe those looks are an intentional design decision. Looks like they didn't test it :|

    • 2

Oh no! The promo descriptive photo made it look so promising. Sorry it falls so short of the expectations. :-(

I love how you can still find the positive gems within the bra, and do hope you get the opportunity to try the 40J soon.

    • 5

I'm looking at insta pictures of it, and on all the bigger cup sizes the models have their arms down and their hair in the way, hiding the sides. This may be a case of, tested well in smaller cup or band sizes, not tested at the top of the size spectrum. Also, there may be sewing errors. I don't know.

    • 1

So frustrating when they "hide" the details. ......

    • Wow, this bra is a mess!

    • 3

Uhhh those wires. That canNOT be on purpose. Somebody done fucked up.

    • 1

OMG those must be wires made of pudding… why oh whyyy.

    • Oh wow :|

    • Wow, that is seriously a mess. Not a well designed bra at all, sadly. The idea of this bra is great, the result though...

    • I was looking forward to this review because the whole concept behind it sounded really good... But wow... hopefully they'll get enough feedback to rework it so it actually works in the range of cup sizes they offer

    • I had the same side gaping issue with CK padded bikinis tops, must be a CK grading thing in big cups or because the straps are more centered, there is too much fabric there? I wonder how it would fit if it had decent wires, I hope you can get 40J for cheap sale price and do some alternations and bra science with it...

    • I don’t get this in other bras of theirs but you’re right, one of the bikinis I have from them did the same thing.

    • Have you considered emailing them to show them how horrible the fit is?

    • 1

Wow. WOW. Mine came in today in 34J, so we shall see...

    • Can’t wait! I hope yours is good! Maybe mine is a lemon.

    • 1

So yeah, I just tried it on real quick. I will try and do a proper review in a separate post tomorrow, but here are a few things to note:

I have the same colorway in a 34J.

The cushion pads do overlap the underwire by maybe 1/4 of an inch. Not much, but enough to relieve pressure imo. I'd say that's a scaling issue on CK's part (as usual).

I get the same weird side gaping, but I often have extra fabric there because my breasts are so center-full. There's definitely a lot of it, however, more than I'd expect. I wonder if part of the issue there is because the bra doesn't really have side wings. You know how normally it goes cup/underwire, a little piece of fabric, a seam and then the band? This bra goes straight from cup/underwire to the band. Where I have that extra fabric is about where a side wing might be, but the bra is expecting breast tissue. Maybe a better fit for someone with a lot of side tissue, idk.

I absolutely get the same wire issue as you do. They're just barely not on my back.

Despite all that I don't totally hate this bra. I'm gonna play around with it and redo the measurements tomorrow.

    • triumphof I know, right? There are problems but it’s still got a lot that’s good!

    Didn't fit

I tried this bra a few weeks ago. If it weren't for free shipping and returns, I wouldn't have because from other reviews here I knew it wouldn't work for me but I was also curious.

The size I received looks like it is the best size for me in this bra. From the front it looks like it fits, doesn't it? But this bra has so many other problems! I doubt I would ever get a proper fit even in another size. The worst thing about this bra is the insanely wide wires! They go literally to my back. (Look at my back pic, I never had a ... bra fit like that!) There is so much room at the sides of the cups that is unnecesary and is just functioning as part of the band.

The cushion at the end of the wires that should stop wires from digging in, does nothing, it even folds to outside of the cups (see back pic)... it's kinda pointless and now very well thought through. On the front there isn't so much space. The bra looks also very wide and doesn't give a very flattering look. Also it does not much to shape, support and uplift my boobs. It's just a huge fail!

To say something positive: I like how wide and comfortable the shoulder straps are! If I look at other straps on CK bras that are so narrow that my shoulders hurt from even looking at them, that is a plus. The fabric felt nice too.

Oh god that wire is all the way on your back! Insane

    • 2

It is insane to have the wires/cup make up so much of this bra. The band looks so tiny in the back and the wires....so painful. What were the thinking?!? Delightful is not a good name for this bra at all!

    • 1

Wow...I'm not sure what to make of this one..the idea behind it was great, but somewhere in the execution everything seemed to go haywire..

Those wires look painfully wide. :(

    • Yes I don't know what they were thinking?! Also the bra just came out in a new burgundy red color, so it has to sell well? I wonder who wears it? All reviews on btb have been negative so far, no one got a good fit in it.
The bra is more "awfull" than "delightfull" ...

    • 1

      What a nightmare

    • To this day no CK bra ever worked for me. I wonder if any ever will.

    • I still wait for a positive review with pics of how the bra fits properly. I really want to see one, I don't mean a CK model pic where they "make it look great" but a real review.

    • Whoa. Those are the widest wires I've ever seen. Like you, I would adore those straps!

    • 1

Whoa. Those are the widest wires I've ever seen. Like you, I would adore those straps!

    • 1

I agree. I have never seen breasts on a womans back. Seriously. CK has some work to do.

    • Maybe the bra was made specifically for horizontal comfort....😂

    • 3

Dear CK, people don't necessarily scale mathematically. Please test your ideas on real people. Signed, everyone.

    • 1

This would be a great bra for folks with really wide set roots though. There are a few fold who have roots this wide. The demographic is pretty small though.

    • 1

I read somewhere, buried in a comment on reddit I think, that Curvy Kate's fit philosophy is that wires need to be actually wider than the breast tissue for good support. I saw that comment twice and wondered about it both times and even tried to google more information, but couldn't find anything. Now I can't find the comment again, but these wires make me wonder if they do feel that way .

    • 1

You can find it in one of their fit videos (I think for princess plunge maybe, or victory) Pinniped but it's a flawed philosophy. Their bras don't have enough side support (that I know of) to actually justify the wide wires.

    • Did you notice how there is not much band on the bra? I wonder if the cups would not have acted as the band If I had to size up in band size?

    • alisa Yep, I noted the band size above. It's crazy.
How flexible are the wires? Do they feel like they are being distorted towards the back? If so, then sizing up in the band/down in the cup may help, though I would still question the band to cup ratio in general.
I have always loved Curvy Kate designs, but never got a good or comfortable fit in them.

    • Yes, I feel like this is a + 2 or +4 band. The cup is also very big for the size I feel.

I want to try it in 44G or 46G and serif it’s any better.

    • 1

I look forward to reading your findings cupandahalf. It will be interesting to see how it compares.

    • 1

MamaPagan I remember that the wires were quite soft and distorted easily. But the wires were already too wide when I put the bra on, there is just a huge side section in this cups. It's like all the volume is meant to be on the sides in this bra!
I don't think it will work at any size for me. Also I think it's weird that they make a bra where you have to size up 2 band size and down 3-4 cup sizes to get a good fit? Who does that when they order a bra? I just go with my "usual" size when I order, either 32JJ or 32J. There must be many returns of this bra.

cupandahalf Lets us know how it goes. I could put one in a random 36GG or so on my Zalando wish list. They stock the bra and have free shipping and returns in my country. Would be interesting...

    • alisa It really doesn't make any sense, I agree.
My understanding is that manufacturers have the larger side cup area in the larger cup ranges for a minimizing effect of the bust, as they are under the blanket assumption that if you are large busted then you want them smaller. Yet to me, pushing them under my armpits doesn't make my breasts look smaller, but instead just makes my midsection look wider and that is not a look I want at all! Besides many breasts won't squish over and under the arms on command, so such bras tend to be painful and awkward of a fit instead. :-/

    • 2

MamaPagan I never liked those Minimizer bras that my Mom bought for me when I was a teenager. They can't magically hide what is there anyway.

Oh how I dislike the east- west look in bras. With a projected narrow bra like the SF I look like I have a waist and a bit more like the hourglass type.

The wider a bra is, the wider I look on top which I dislike. Also boobs under armpits??? It's uncomfortable! I can type much better on my keyboard if my boobs are in front of me.

It depends on body and boob shape. I remember one blogger that prefered the wide over projected look.

    • 2

      alisa I agree 100%
Got to love our differences in preference!

This is the 32HH - Curvy Kate » Delightfull Full Cup Bra (1111) in a 32HH. I sized down from my sister size of 34GG as I like my bands very tight and am losing weight. The band doesn’t feel tight at all! This bra is very stretchy. This bra makes my boobs look amazing under clothes, a very beautiful lift and separation, and I will buy more bras in this style.

From the side view it looks as though the wires are so wide on you. I mean, as long as your comfortable, that's the important thing though. It really is a gorgeous color.

    • Just popping in to say thank you for including measurements! We seem to be pretty similar and I just tried this on in 32H but the cups were obviously at least a size small, I wasn't quite sure but comparing measurements it really seems like the 32HH would be the better fit. It might be that I tried a darker colourway combined with the cups being a bit small, but this style in black definitely runs TTS, it might even be a tad small band wise.

This bra fit much better in the band than the 40JJ - Curvy Kate » Curvy Kate Delightfull Full Cup Bra (FT972D I tried and the wires felt good but there was way way too much fabric on the top side of the bra under the armpit, and not enough up front. The wires were the right size on this one and came up high enough where the rubber bumper to protect digging in worked. It was close to being good but I would have needed a 46GG and then to have taken a dart of about 2 inches of material out at the armpit to make it work. So close.

Yeah, this bra is just crap. I think my measurements underestimate the cup depth because I was doing the over-the-knee technique and seemingly ALL of the depth (if you even wanna call it that) is at the sides of the bra. My breasts are very center-full and certainly more close-set than wide, so it might work better for someone with wider breasts? The wires are pretty soft and flexible, and personally I think that + the extra fabric on the sides is responsible for the way the wires are wrapping nearly around to my back.

Oh, and the comfort cushion things? Nice idea, but pointless in execution. Possibly because the wires are so far back, the cushions just ended up sort of creasing and then flipping up and outwards away from my body. If they were sewed flat that might help!

      I’m glad I wasn’t the only one!

    • 2

Hoo boy. Well, it's still real depth--it's just totally in the wrong place for you! A bit like having a shoe with room for a 6th, 7th and 8th toe ;-) Depending on your breast shape and bust weight this particular bra might work in a size about 2 cup volumes down and 1 band size up--but only if it's not too short/closed and shallow for your center volume. Otherwise you'll overflow in the smaller cup even though you're only using about 70% of the volume in the 34J cup volume.

    • 1

These wires are made of pudding! I thought Elomi Caitlyn wires were bad but this is worse. I wanted to ask you, do you stretch the band just very little when you do the stretched band measurement? Because I find that band really small for a 34 band? I think you could size up to a 36 band and a smaller cup and maybe get a better fit but I could be wrong…

    • wendybien You're absolutely right, it is real depth. In my head I was struggling imagine how anyone could have breast tissue all the way over there; but now I'm imagining someone with a much wider frame or broader shoulders and yeah, it could work for someone built like that. I don't think the bra would work for me in a smaller cup/larger band. You can see how it is threatening to cut in at the center already.

alisa I suppose I am conservative with stretched band measurements, especially on bras I know I am going to return. I didn't find the band to be particularly tight. I usually go for a 34 band in CK because they tend to stretch out quickly imo, I'm in between 34 and 36 to begin with, and I like a tighter band so I can loosen straps and avoid neck/shoulder pain.

    • triumphof if you are uncertain about band fit, you could just try this one with an extender (or two!) and then at least that would enable you to assess exactly what the deal is with the cup shape and depth. I agree that in these photos the cup edge is cutting in at the top but it also has that characteristic look of "cup too big pulled halfway round body by too-tight band" which typically will cause that edge to cut in anyway. The excess cup height and width is also causing the whole cup to slump down on you which falsifies the fit at the cup edge even more.

    • My bra also had a band like that. If you stretched it at all the wires bent back. I’m thinking of trying the bra in a 44G! 2 band sizes up from my last bra, 4 cup sizes down. O.O

    • triumphof Thanks for the clarifying about your band measurements. Yes it makes sense not to stretch the bands on bras you want to return too much. I also don't stretch them to the maximum, but I try to do as much as I can without having the band stretch out.
