My mom has said two things to me recently that I think are very common misconceptions about busty bodies.
1. You'll just have to wear lots of knits (for your workplace wardrobe).
Not so much anymore! There are many brands that are filling the "busty, not plus-size" nice. DDatelier, Pepperberry, Urkye and BiuBiu make some really nice professional looking clothing, and in woven fabrics no less. You can even get button-up shirts! Campbell & Kate, Carissa Rose, AJ Rumina and Rebecca & Drew all make classy-looking button-up shirts that are tailored just for breasts.

2. Some bodies just aren't made for running, I'm sorry.
Ugh, ugh, ugh. I hate that defeatist attitude. Sure, if your body is having structural problems or you physically can't walk, then you probably can't run either. (But hey, Oscar Pistorius!) Your breasts don't have to slow you down. I know there was basically no such thing as a super supportive sports bra in a small band and large cups when I was a teenager, but there are now. The Shock Absorbers I loved as a horseback riding teen now come in my size, as do sports bras by Panache and Freya. The only things holding me back from running are my bum knee and my sheer laziness. (And now, the rain.)

But, what else did I expect? She’s the one who told me that I’d never find a bra that kept me from bouncing while walking, and I especially wouldn’t find one in the baby pink I desired. I still can’t find my size in Nordstroms or Title 9, but I know I’m not a freak because I can find everything online, as well as a burgeoning community of people to vouch for our existence.

Mom, the bra market has changed SO much. Embrace it!

  • Your mom seems well meaning, if a little misguided. I love my mom, and she has many great qualities, but bra advice has never been one of them. She's a "normal" size, so she doesn't really understand. I think she's mentioned bras to me three times in my life.
    1. "Here, put these in the cart" - My first bra buying experience, where I learned you just grab something off the rack and assume it will fit.
    2. "What's going on with... There's something wrong with... your... bra" - Agreed. It fit awfully and I was already very self conscious about it.
    3. "Whose bra is this?" When doing laundry when I came home from college. I wonder if she thought I was bringing home someone else's underwear.

  • I am so glad there are brands like Pepperberry, Biubiu and others. Now I can wear tops, dresses and especially coats & jackets that never fitted me because of my dramatic bust/waist ratio. However it's about time the high street big busted women have.
