I feel so uncomfortable and sad :(

I just want a comfortable bra!! I have bras that seem to fit. Band is snug, doesn't ride up and doesn't feel too tight. My breasts are enclosed in the cups, they don't spill out and the cups don't gap. If I try a larger cup, my breasts seem to slide around in the center of the cup and don't get lifted. A larger band size is too loose and slides up or down in the front (even if the cup is too big).
So I have found bras that fit in the band and the cup and ones that are open enough so they don't cut in to my upper breast tissue. But the straps! Oh the straps... They annoy my arm/area where shoulder-armpit-chest meets. On other bras it's the part of the cup just behind the strap, from strap to wire basically. The wing is not too high and the wire does not dig in, but from where the wire ends and to where the strap is attached, the fabric isn't "curvy" enough. If that part was more of a curve and less of a straight(-ish) line, there wouldn't be a problem.
I'm recovering from a long term illness and I haven't worn bras a lot for a long time. So I'm probably also extra sensitive. Wrong size bras (too big band, too small cup) give me a lot of back pain, but I have no pain at all when not wearing a bra. I often hear or read that a correct bra will help eliminate the back pain on can have from the larger breasts, but my breasts don't cause any pain at all. I just wish I could find a bra that was comfortable and looked nice, gave shape and uplift.
I have wide-rooted, shallow, semi-firm, full on top breasts that sit quite close. My shoulders are probably "normal" width and I don't have a problem with straps sliding of them since they sort of go "up" instead of sloping more down.
I just don't know what to do anymore. I feel so wrongly shaped and like I just have to live with the discomfort. I know I have to get more used to wearing bras again, but I really can't stand the itchy feeling and the cutting straps. I also find it hard to find bras that give enough uplift and don't just "hold" them up. They often lift enough from the bottom, but then there's too much fabric in the apex (so my breasts just kind of lie there(too deep cup)) and at the same time the upper edge of the cup cuts into my breast tissue that seems to continue until 2-3 inches below my collarbone. And almost everything seems to give a pointy shape and I just can't take that. I feel so gross when they get pointy and separated.
I just really want to be able to wear something nice without feeling like going into hysterics due to feeling uncomfortable.

  • My sympathy as you transition back to wearing bras! The problem of extra fabric in the apex of the cups while getting cutting in at the cups' upper edge is a classic case of cups being too small. The more experienced bra shoppers on bratabase, correct me if I'm remembering incorrectly, please. I believe an overly pointy shape is a corollary to the too small cups, too.

I have a Parfait by Affinitas Anna demi cup bra whose straps don't connect directly to the cups but instead to a triangular piece of fabric. The bottom of the triangular fabric is sewn down to the outer edges of the cups. There's a great review of this bra on hourglassy.com. There's a very clear picture of the feature I'm talking about. I, too, have had problems with straps digging in at the shoulder/armpit/chest area with other bras, but the Parfait Anna doesn't cause me any such issues.

I see you list your size as 32GG, and Parfait by Affinitas has a 30-40 D-G size range, but sophisticatedpair.com/blog did a review of at least one Parfait bra that came up big in the cups. You may be able to find a bra that has that triangular fabric feature that fits you. I highly recommend you talk to Erica at sophisticatedpair.com for fitting help. She has a preview of the spring line on her blog, too. Erica has a bricks and mortar lingerie store on the East Coast, but she is great to talk to by phone for fitting advice. The number of the store is (336) 270-6744. She will also consult by email. Plus she has a lot of other brands, one of which may suit you.

Lastly, I would like to emphasize that NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR BREASTS OR YOUR BODY. You feel otherwise, and I understand that feeling. But the truth is many, many women have a body very much like yours. When you find some bras that suit you, please post reviews and pictures to help those women avoid the ugly, misshapen feeling that's getting you down. And thanks for posting!

  • I have to go almost right away, but, I just wanted to say that there is nothing wrong with you. What is wrong is the cut of bras. Straps being too close together and armholes not cut big enough is a quite common problem, but it doesn't appear until you're in the right size.

If you're handy you can alter your bras, but based on your sizes I think that you will be able to find bras that work for you, only you might need to search a bit more for them.

The wrinkling is mentioned above, it's usually called "orange in a glass" syndrom, and is a very very common sign of a too small cup. It might not feel as if the cup is too small to start with, but it actually is. Just like when trying to push and orange into a regular glass you get extra space at the bottom of the glass, just because the opening is too small for the whole orange to fit in.
