I took my best friend (I'll refer to her as Midnight) bra shopping the other day. She's was in a 38C and it was the way wrong size. I guessed at a 32D, since her ribcage is just bigger than mine, but her back is less muscular.
We went into a shop that carried quality A-DD lingerie, and it was a ... disaster. The lady fit based on what shirt size you wore, and said that since she sold up to a FFcup, she 'carried every size available on the market'. She looked at me like I was nuts when I said I'm probably an H cup. Anyhow, she brought Midnight out a 36C and declared she needed a 36B, as the cups gapped. I checked, and the band was massive, and the cups slightly large. I requested the next two band sizes down. The lady resolutely brought a 36B, despite my request, and declared it fit much better, with less gapping. I, again, requested a smaller band size. She brought out a 34C, which fit slightly better but the band still rode up (just from putting it on) and the cups still gapped. We had issues with back fat from the band riding up. Because of this, the lady refused to give us a smaller band, rather, loosened the straps all the way and simply pulled the band down. Of course, this made the cups gap, so she returned with a 34B, which was declared to be Midnight's perfect size. The band was on the tightest hooks, the straps lengthened completely, the gore did not touch her chest and the underwires cut her breasts in half. I pointed these out and was told the bra fit perfectly and the deal with the underwire is a 'minor issue' and 'not going to affect the fit'.
After this, she tried to sell us a damaged bra (the bridge was ripping away from the underwire) at full price. When I pointed out her bra was damaged, she said bras were meant to be pretty, and the slight rip would in no way detract from its usefulness. We left immediately.
I took her to Brava lingerie (which specializes in D-K cups) and asked for a saleslady to fit Midnight, explaining what we had gone through, and proceeded to ask after a fitting for myself (hoping to get rid of the under-breast wrinkles). Unfortunately, I had no luck as the lady didn't think I needed a larger cupsize (although I did find one bra that ran slightly large in the cups that fit relatively well). Midnight walked out with three bras in a 32DD and a much better understanding of what her breasts need in a bra.
