Spillage from sides front and underneath cups back isn't totally parallel and I have to wear the bra on the tightest setting STILL after taking it from a 38DD down to a 30 something. Cups fit worse than they did after alteration and I'm at a loss for what size to get since the biggest stores go to is C-DD 38-44 :\ ribcage measurement is 27.5 bust is 40.5 or 41.5

your measurements are close-ish to mine. (i have a slightly bigger rib than you)
I myself am wearing 32 HH. I haven't found my perfect bra yet, I doubt 32HH will be my final size, but it's a hell-of-a-lot closer than what I can see in your pic.
I would guess at a 30 band and maybe like a ... J? cup.I buy them (smaller band larger bust) online from places that have money back for returns policies.
Are you in a position to online shop?

sister size can be good for altering and maybe a 1 step shift over for special occasions bras, but wearing a sister sized bra for more than a little while tends to lead to back pain...

Stores are useless in that size range! You have to buy bras on the internet. The band size should be the same as your ribcage, or close to it. Then if you do the measurements the way this website size to enter your own measurements, your different perimeter measurement are all approximations of the depth you need in a cup. then you look up bras on this site to see what in your band (a 28 most likely, or 30 if you like it looser) has that cup depth.
then start ordering on line. I've been finding some great deals on amazon - you can search on your bra size
Like the lola - on amazon they have a 30K on clearance right now for 15. A 30K is 13 inch depth. Which I think might be too small for you though? But shoudl fit better than that picture?

Upload your measurements to Bratabase using the site's specifications, this will help figure out your optimal cup depth and width. Overbust measurement is not precise enough to help if you have a small torso and larger boobs!

It also helps if you take leaning measurements because that helps move all the tissue to the front and makes it easier not to squish your tissue when measuring.

I agree with animated because there is an inch difference between my standing and leaning measurement. I think the leaning one is more accurate.

well, but for me (very big and dangling) i do better with my laying-down perimeter. It really depends on your breast

My laying down perimeter is the same as my horizontal perimeter. I agree with
@dbmamaz's suggestion because perimeter measurement is more precise than the standing/leaning measurements. -
I also do better with the lying down measurement--the leaning one is wildly off base on my soft, projected, narrow bust. (I wouldn't take a single downvote personally, any schmo can vote up or down, if they had something compelling to say, they would have posted a comment explaining why they differed in opinion).

OK. I'm still confused here. How exactly do all these measurements help us to find the optimal depth and width? And doesn't the wire length (the putative partial circumference) have some bearing? I look at some of the measurements for some bras with larger cup sizes than I'm currently wearing, and it *seems* that they should fit me.

Kristine I agree with you. The wire length is very important, esp. to me. I think there should be a way you can measure to figure out how long you would like your cup wire to be. I would take a tape measure and just measure an imaginary bra cup wire. And then whatever measurement you get from doing that, that would probably be your most comfortable bra cup wire length. Like you measure the bra's cup separation and the center gore measurement.
I feel like a bra is too small if the wire length is too short. I like a balance between depth, length of the wires, and width of the cups. 9"+ for length of the cup wires, 8-9" depth, 5"-5.5" in the width of the cup.
This wire length, depth and width of the cups, are the kind of balance that is one of my favorite. -
Nayanya Sure, that would help you determine the most comfortable wire length for you (and I have done that), but I think wire length is also a factor in cup volume. I'm just not sure yet what that volume formula should be, given all the measurements we have.

Kristine Yeah. If I had the perfect hand bra, my boobs would look square and round at the same time. I like my (IDK if it works or not) formula for figuring out if your under bust and above is l l shaped or A shaped instead of the majority of women being V shaped from their under bust and above it.
Sometimes I think my under bust and my rib cage above my under bust is () shaped. I figured out that this is one of the reasons why someone or me would have these problems. : bra cups bag up or wrinkle on top; the cups of perfectly fitting bras gape on top.
But then, if get all of your breast tissue into a cup and then press the cups closer to your body and higher, you get quad boob at the top of the cups. And realize that you have breast tissue all the way up to your collar bone. I think I'm even and have medium projection, but I'm starting to think I have tall roots too. Sometimes looking shallow on top.
I need some l l or A shaped bands. -
Something else I don't understand is cup/wire width as it relates cup size. If I'm very happy with a given bra style in a given cup size and then overnight my breast grows, that will mean that I need a cup with more volume, but *not* necessarily a cup/wire that is wider. If I *do* need a wider cup, that would mean that the margins of my breast either got closer to my sternum or further back under my arm, and I don't think it works that way. What that would mean is that the bra style no longer works for me, since a larger cup would also mean a wider cup. At least that's how I understand all this stuff.

I think they can't find models that this bra fits. It's like an off, soft version of a bullet bra. More narrow cups but it expects you to have like almost a tubular shaped boob projection. -
Nayanya, yes, I know all bras are different. I guess what I meant to ask is if my conclusion is right, that a specific bra style is designed for a specific relationship between depth, width and wire length, and if one grows out of that size, simply getting the same style in a larger cup is not exactly the right thing to do.

I think the bramakers are not consistent with their sizing. I mean, someone posted an adventure that she'd bought 2 different sizes of the same model and they had the exact same depth, but the larger size had wider cups. Serious fail.
I think your breasts do get wider as they grow, at least sometimes. I mean, they dont grow like pinochio's nose, straight out. I also find I have some flexibility with how wide a cup I can handle (but my boobs do go all the way to my underarm).
I also havent noticed any variation in wire size being an issue for me yet.
Again, I'm not convinced there is any 'formula' - different breasts fit their bras better based on different perimeter measurements - depending on how perky, esp, I think, and what shape you prefer. So you have to experiment again with each bra you try. But once you find one you like a lot, then, if you dont grow, you look for others with similar measurements.
And of course every company sizes differently too - I've ordered everything from an HH to a K, because companies are not consistent. and sometimes padded bras run smaller than non-padded bras.
You smaller cups have more choices so I suppose its harder - there are honestly probably only 20 bras available in the US that even come in my size, so its not that hard to figure out what does and doesnt fit me. If i had a hundred options, I'm sure it'd be more overwhelming.

If you go by the 27.5" - 41.5" measurements, 28JJ would probably be the best fit if you like tight bands. 30J, 32HH and 34H are all sister sizes of 28JJ.
If you go by the 40.5" measurement that would be a 28J, 30HH, 32H, or a 34GG.
All of these sizes would fit you better than this bra you are wearing in a 38DD. EBay is a usually non-expensive way to find bras in your size. Good luck!
